It just means that some people did it back then, not that everyone was ok with it. Certainly it was an extraordinary enough fact that it made it's way into his name.

I think a lot of people did a lot of highly dangerous and awful things back then because they were dangerous and awful times, when they sometimes did what they had to in order to survive. That doesn't mean they were all happy and proud of themselves for it.
