George Lane _Daily Life in the Mongol Empire_ has 10 short Mongolian folk tales. I haven't read them, but a quick skim shows that one is "A Story of Two Friends", Beseech-No-One and Help-No-One, who get hosed because they don't cooperate. So maybe make up something about steppe survivalism and tie that into shamanic spirit exchange. Or do more of a Praxian human/animal survival pact kind of story, if you want to emphasize horses in particular.
