My art direction has never been to be just like any particular Earth culture (if for no reason that most of the "analogs" are actually pretty loose).

BTW, I have also art directed Pamaltelan dress -- see the homelands in Men of the Sea.

In King of Dragon Pass we certainly used Iceland as a starting point for Dragon Pass Orlanthi (both live in a place with cold winters), but we added to this (notably Vingan women).

But that's Dragon Pass. In Umathela, their clothing is nothing like that.

For Anadikki, I've used ancient Balts as inspiration.

As for Afghans, I'm pretty sure I used some of their costume as inspiration, but I forget where (or perhaps when).

Anyway, don't take analogs too literally. I'd think more along lines of: they ride horses, so they probably wear trousers. They live in a hot place, so they probably don't wear trousers. Etc.
