A third possibility is to allow the sacrifice of abilities in some way. One existing example of this is the HQ challenge, but it's a good deal more specialised than what we're talking about here. Relatedly, there's the mystic strike rules, but, they suck. ;-) But I think there's a conceptually sound idea in there, regarding abilities, or uses of abilities in such a way that the abilities themselves can be impaired by the act of using them. For example, if you try and use your magic to achieve some huge effect, and it goes wrong, maybe you've offended your god until you can atone for it (or pissed off the ancestors at you, or blown a medium-sized cerebral blood vessel...). The idea of applying negative mods from unsuccessful augments to the augmenting ability is rather in the same vein.
