There are several ways to increase the risk while reducing the reward by "manipulating" the opponent. The opponent wagers a lower ability but backs it up by (choose one or more of the following):

1 - loads of APs
2 - one or more higher related abilities
3 - one or two hero points (this one will really put the frighteners 

on a player).
