It is certainly true in my own experience that some people I've gamed with don't like the idea of bumps very much, while others are fanatical about how great it is.
I like it, and when I'm playing a HW character I generaly imagine that the HPs I spend on bumps represent the intervention of fate, or my character expending magical resources of some kind. I think this interpretation of what HPs spent on bumps are should properly be left to the player.
