I've been thinking about that sort of thing for a Feng Shui adaption.

The idea there was to give each character two specialised abilities working like affinities (which could be hand-to-hand combat, gun combat, magic, chi powers and so on) and appropriate feats. Right now I'm waiting for the new rules before I do any more with the idea.
