This is a bit of a tanget to your point, but not all common magic needs any grand cosmological ideas. For example, the story behind the Survival Tricks that Waha teaches is simple: In the darkness, Waha collected broken pieces of magic. He fixed up those he found useful and taught them to his people. That's all there needs to be. I'm not exactly sure how this translates to other religions (they're all ground men).
