Jane asked about gaining feats not covered by a character's affinities:

"If I either put them in her 100 words, or "buy" them with a HP in play, she can learn stand-alone feats from any other sub-cult of Vinga, or of Orlanth"

I thought that you could only gain feats if you were either a devotee of a God or the feat was common magic of some sort. (Hero Cults are another matter as they generally only have feats, not affinities.)

If your GM is willing to let you take another subcult (or even one of your own subcults) feats as common magic there shouldn't be a problem.

Here's how I handle it taking Merik Ergolfson, Initiate of Destor as an example. Because he's a crass sort of fellow he quite liked the sound of the "snatch breath" feat from his wind affinity. He can improvise the feat at his wind affinity - 5 (he's concentrated) but wants it a bit better than the 12 he's currently got.

I'd give him two options:

If he takes it as a common magic feat, then he can raise the feat as any other common magic. However, if he increases his wind affinity, his feat doesn't automatically increase, unlike a devotees.

So, Merik has a choice. Does he specialise in Snatch Breath, or does he do things in a more general way?

Cheers,

Ash
