The problem being, I guess, that some other people evidently find them far from sufficient :)

Yes, this is the approach I have used in Kingdom of the Flamesword, which will have difficulties for things such as jousting, convincing the Inquisition of your innocence, and so on. From past discussions, it will probably have more specific numbers in it than some people like, but possibly a fair bit less than some others like. (For instance, there's no stat block for King Guilmarn or any of the Seshnelan heroes described in the book). I'll give it enough detail to be useful to *me*, because I'm the GM I know best - I can merely hope that its useful to others, without swamping too many people with irrelevant detail or rule mechanical crunch.

But, in short, yes, I agree with you :)

There's certainly a limit, yes, and you'll never cover every eventuality anyway. I'd like to see somewhat more tables - or at least numbered examples - than we've got, but its probably more useful to provide solid advice to the GM on how to set resistances themselves without appearing arbitrary/inconsistent. And 'do whatever is the most good for the story' is, to me at least, pretty unhelpful advice. At the very least, it needs a lot more explication as to what that means, and ideally, it needs alternatives for those (like me) whose minds simply don't work that way.
