Wooden shield with pretty bronze overlay. Sounds like the very pretty one found in the Thames at Battersea. In the British Museum, I think, unless they've moved it.

Searching their database... Yep! And two similar ones. Metal decorative sheet on a wooden base. Gorgeous!
