One thing to remember here is that boasting is not lieing. It is
telling of one's deeds, and is considered to be normal activity.
People are expected to state who they are and so on. It serves a
couple of purposes:
1. Answeres "Who am I?"
2. Answers, "Here what I can do," in trms of setting up knowledge for
outsiders about one's power and, especially, one's connections (As in,
"Don't mess with me because my brother-in-law has a large band of
warriors," kind of warnings.)
The art is in finding the right balance of fact and pride and humility, plus the artistic/poetic language appreciaed by one's audience.
