I pretty much assume everything is on the heroplane and doesn't affect the world large scale and that's it. (Now that I have RuneQuest Glorantha the Second Age, it seems to say the God Learner's Secret was they could get off the Hero Plane and do real changes. So just saying "you can't do that" seems fine. Not sure what that means for the Shipraising in Gathering Thunder, but whatever.)

You can't change the world from the Heroplane. You *can* change the world from the God/Essence/Spirit planes.

Computer game example...

The Heroplane is like a computer game - you load it (Cross the barrier to the heroplane), then play with it, gaining "stuff", then exit it. All nice and neat. Only you (and/or your supporters) get changed by the quest. Most people only play the game that's loaded (only follow the path of their specific Quest).

Arkat and others found ways to "hack" the game - they found levels that no-one knew about, or managed to play one game using another game's interface, or simply opend another game and "jumped" into it.

The Godlearners and a few others said "To hell with the *game*, let's look at the code." They hacked the binary code, read the adventure text, and took what they wanted. They were able to give themselves Godlike abilities because they were able to manipulate the code "behind" the game.

The Spirit./Essence/God planes are the operating system - hack *that* and you can change the way the whole system runs.
