It was originally a movie called Veiviseren (The Pathfinder). It is based on an old saami legend. The movie never explain where the bad guys come from, but they look very viking-like. Very good movie. Although I've always thought of the main characters as Uncolings.

There should be a be a version with english subtitles since it was nominated for an oscar for best foreign film in 1988. I have absolutely no idea how difficult it would be to get such a film.
