considerably, and ensures everyone has the same assumptions (do all your players know what's in a Heortling longhouse?)

I've said it before but as a shorthand for Thunder Rebels I tend to take 'How Would You Survive as a Viking' to most sessions. Its great for time saving - just show them the picture. Sure there are some Gloranthan differences, but a picture is worth a thousand words. Players tend to like it too 'cos it is easier that listening to me rattle on, and they may 'see' things that they want to spark off.

I tend to throw in descriptive details to the narrative when I'm trying to make a point i.e. these people are rich, poor, have a lot of contact with foriegners (what's the clans attitude to the Lunars? Look around the chief's mead hall. Are there Lunar imports among the tapestries and table ware etc?), or to set the mood (I'm a big fan of telling you what your eating as it reminds you your not in Kansas anymore).

In some ways I guess a map is a simple picture, so it works for that role too...
