I am not so sure. If they did their nasty dealings before the Dragon
Kill, they wouldn't be human anymore... and hence more likely to
survive. Perhaps they committed themselves to the Bloody Tusk as the
Dragonkill was closing in on the area - or changed in an attempt to
fend off the Golden Horde and were spared because of that.

I think that's a good thought. Lions figure prominently in Middle
Eastern Bronze Age art, particularly in some areas such as Lydia
where they had been hunted to extinction.
