Same as with any other catastrophic failure (magical or otherwise). You've got to figure it out as it happens.

It partially depends on what you're calling "Catastrophic failure" - a Fumble result on the dice, or a Complete Defeat in a contest. A Fumble in a Simple contest is probably pretty bad and will wind up in the lower parts of the Results chart, while a Fumble in an extended contest might not be so bad (simply a transfer of 3x AP, which might not be bad at all, if you only bid 3 AP out of 30). A Complete Defeat, on the other hand, is a complete defeat, and the hero should lose something major (After all, he has hit "Dying" on the results chart, which means that his skillset should be affected, maybe his entire "Devotree of" keyword is in trouble, or it could simply mean that he is literally dying: thrown up into the air and slammed to the ground, his body broken and bleeding......

What would happen if he catastrophically failed a Body Slam wrestling move? or a "Verbal Slam" argument?

While there are rules around the getting of and using of magic, when the dice hit the table, it's all just abilities in a contest. The final result of that contest should help you determine what happened. The ability used can help inform that decision, but there are no hard and fast rules.
