As we all know from Storm Tribes, Lhankor Mhy invented three scripts: two vocabularies, and one code system. Most Orlanthi documents are in either "cat scratching" (the Southern script used by Heortling and surrounding peoples), or "dog scratching" (used by the Orlanthi of Talastar and Ralios and surrounding peoples). Both scripts use the common vocabulary that more or less reproduces many Heortling sounds. The third script, "stone scratching," is difficult to learn, and the cult uses it only for magical formulae. This script uses the second vocabulary, whose words change in meaning according to the Elasa Secrets, a complex code system that must be learned separately.

So what do these languages look like?

Well, based on recent discussions "cat scratching" is an syllabic semi-alphabet (or possibly an abjad or abugidas) composed of light lines and curves, that flow together. It looks like a cursive script and is somewhat reminiscent of Tengwar or Serto Syriac. It is most popular amongst the Heortlings.

"Dog scratching" is similar in structure but with mainly straight
lines and few curves. It looks somewhat reminscent of ancient Iberian script or Phoenician. It is most popular amongst the Talastarings and Ralians.

"Stone scratching" is used for magic formulae and must be chisseled.
It is remiscent of old Italic or Runic script.

Only Lhankhor Mhy sages learn Stone Scratching. However, according to Greg, sages will teach non-initiates Dog Scratching and Cat Scratching.
