I suspect that the ritual stuff would always be carried out in a temple. Probably by the young and enthusiastic members, with their cult superiors carefully monitoring their behaviour afterwards. There would probably be some prescribed limit about the frequency and total number of such rituals that anyone can participate in. All to minimise the risks involved.
Oh definitely, what we need is carefully monitored and limited levels of orgiastic, bloodthirsty violence. Only previously approved spontaneous expressions of devotion to the god will be tolerated.
