The Free-will-override was first proposed in the context of an on-going contest, not after a defeat.

While a contestant has *any* positive AP he has free will, and can declare any action he wants (some might not be as useful as others, and some might be freakishly dumb to do, and some he might not have the skill to do, but he can declare them as his action). Only once the contest is over does he temporarily loses his "free will" - either through physical inability to perform, loss of confidence in his own abilities, magcial conditions, etc.

While he may have the physical ability to block the bridge, he has lost the "cross the bridge first" contest, so *will* back up and let the other guy cross. (or jump over the side, or squeeze to the side, or whatever). Once the winner is across the contest is over, and the loser can start another contest if he wants. But he can't start another contest to prevent the winner from crossing *while* he is crossing - he's lost the contest, the winner is across before the loser gets the courage/rashness to oppose him again.
