They use a special Birthing Hut.

My speculation is that it requires a ritual up to a year in length, with a Vingan as the 'father'. The Vingan and Nandani retire to the hut. During the lengthy ceremony, they may not leave the hut. Eventually they emerge, the Nandani cradling the new child and the Vingan behaving as a proud 'father' (presumably, neighbouring Durulz offer her a cigar). However, during the ritual only the clan Ernaldan holy women and elders may approach the hut, and the 'father' and 'mother' must keep themselves hidden from view. Failure to maintain these taboos can make this powerful magic go awry, causing the Vingan to become pregnant instead of the Nandani.
