I think we are treating it a bit like Heroquest Station Results (p. 202). The magician says what benefit he or she wants. The player and the narrator work out what resistance this corresponds to. The magician then performs a ritual, using the rules on p.p. 101-102, against the resistance. The level of victory or defeat translates into a bonus or penalty on a future use of some appropriate ability of the character.
